CHAPTER FIVE

Ryan woke up with remarkably more color than he’d gone to bed with. Enrique came in around eight, checked his bandages, and announced we’d be released within the hour. I peeked over his shoulder as he worked and was overjoyed when I saw all the gashes were closed and almost completely healed.

“I’m going to look twice as hard for a place for you,” I said as Enrique peeled off a few of the bandages where the wounds had completely disappeared.

Enrique smiled, his eyes locked on Ryan’s chest in deep concentration. “Appreciate it.” His eyes flicked toward the door. “Listen. The doc might come in and if he gets a look at these wounds, he’s going to have questions. Keep me out of it, if you don’t mind. I rarely perform healings, and never on humans. There are too many chances to get found out.”

I mimed zipping my lips up. “We’ll tell him fast healing runs in the family.”

Enrique stood, peeling off his gloves. “Thanks. You still have my number?”

I waved my phone at him. “Are you healed in other healing modalities or only physical?”

“Physical is my strongest. Mental is second. I can’t do anything about rampant magic or terminal diseases. The second tempts fate a little, and I try never to do that. I can take pain away in a patient like that, but if I get the sense me messing around in there is pushing back against the universe, I stop and let it run its course, no matter how hard it proves to be.” From the shadows in his eyes, I’d guess it happened to him more than once.

“You’d be welcome in Hallow Hills. I’ll call you as soon as I know more.”

He nodded and headed out the door. “Hope to see you again.”

“Thanks for everything, Enrique,” Ryan croaked, his voice still rough from his terrible night’s sleep.

The nurse waved and left us alone with a tray full of orange juice and stale biscuits. Breakfast of the gods in front of us, for sure. Ryan grimaced down at the tray and gave me such a pathetic look, I had to laugh. “We’ll stop for breakfast on the way back. Restaurant or drive through?”

He stared at me with puppy dog eyes. “Kate’s house with buttermilk pancakes?”

My heart fluttered with warm and gooey feelings. “Oh, so you’re that kind of sick person, are you?” I joked. “Should I get you a bell and a pitcher of mimosas?”

Ryan’s eyes glinted. “If I could get up and chase you right now, I would.”

“You’d never catch me!”

The door opened then, revealing a different doctor from yesterday. This one had a colder demeanor to him, more direct and no-nonsense. Tall with silvery blonde hair and ice blue eyes, he looked like he’d stepped off a Swiss mountainside. Sharp cheekbones accentuated the handsome angles of his face and the straight line of his nose. He looked like he could have been a runway model. But, his bedside manner was nonexistent and every time he flicked a gaze over at me, it felt like he’d taken my measure, then completely dismissed me.
